What Abraham Maslow Said About Bastards
Treat them as the bastards they are.
More correctly, this is what the psychologist Abraham Maslow said:
“The correct thing to do with authoritarians is to take them realistically for the bastards they are and then behave towards them as if they were bastards. That is the only realistic way to treat bastards.
If one smiles at them and assumes that trusting and giving them the keys to the pantry is going to reform them suddenly, then all that will happen is that…they will become contemptuous of the weak whom they will see as spineless, unmasculine sheep to be taken advantage of.
I have found that the best thing for me to is to break their back immediately….to make them jump, even to clout them on the head … [to] show very clearly who is boss. …Then and only then could I teach them that it is possible for a boss, a strong man, to be kind, gentle, trusting and so on.”
Maslow’s words ring true more than ever. We, who aim to be well-meaning, democratic, reasonable human beings, must understand there is a time for everything. Right now, the world has an abundance of bastards. It is time to treat bastards as the bastards they are.
Whether they sit in Washington, Moscow, Teheran, Beijing or Caracas.
